Skin Type Hype — What is the Right Skincare Routine?
by Rebecca Giorgilli

Achieving great skin is so rarely down to simple genetics. Most of us have to make an effort for the sake of our skin — on a daily basis — to get the results we’re happy with.
What makes matters worse is that there’s so much noise surrounding skincare routines, clouding our knowledge of what exactly to put on our body. The 10-step Korean skincare routine is the latest craze to hit the market, adding to the twice-daily, daily, weekly, or monthly applications we’re already advised to do.
We see so much hype around skin types (dry, normal, sensitive, combination, oily and acne-prone). It puts you in a state of constant search, asking: what skin type am I?
For a start, this was actually a model constructed by the cosmetics industry in an effort to sell more products, and squeeze your precious skin into a box.
The thing is though — rarely does our skin squeeze neatly into any box.
The truth is, we have witnessed women experiencing almost all skin types at once!
I found myself in my early teens at the Clinique counter believing their three-step program would deliver miracles, only to see my acne covered skin go from bad to worse. It turns out the soap cleansing bar was stripping my skin, triggering an overproduction of sebum in an effort to balance itself!
How did beauty become so cluttered and complicated when radiant skin can be so simple?
Layering too many products on top of another can only confuse skin further. This is especially true with the inclusion of synthetic ingredients, emulsifiers and preservatives, which can result in a cocktail of chemical ingredients, doing more harm than good.
We believe a ritual with fewer products of greater quality, is more beneficial to both our skin and our bank account.
This is the sole reason our entire collection consists of only 3 products. (Our soon to be released Purity Polish is available with our Ritual Combo).
Here at Thalia, we believe that we should all adopt a minimalist, pleasure-filled routine, by providing the skin with optimal nutrition and strategic use of powerful essential oils, to bring all skin types back into balance.
We refer to our formulations as multi-correctional, as we have addressed specific skin concerns with the inclusion of botanicals that target these issues. We believe in doing away with multiple toners and overnight masks and taking things back to all-natural basics.
As a mother and business owner, it was imperative that I created a small power-packed, multi-purpose range of rituals that ticked all the boxes in a minimalist way.
If we break it down, what are the daily actions we should be taking to achieve optimum skin health?
1. Removal of make-up, dirt and debris, that has built up on our skin during the day
2. Offering our skin hydration
3. Providing protection through antioxidants to combat free radicals
4. Offering skin nutrition that strengthens the skin barrier and ensures optimal skin health
And voila! There you have it, folks.
You might want to add in a weekly action to this, such as an exfoliating treatment or face mask, to remove dead skin cells and reset the skin.
It all begins with our Cleansing Truth, which removes impurities (without stripping skin) and doubles as a face or body moisturiser, thanks to the inclusion of luxury oils such as Argan, Tamanu and Camellia. Just add a few extra drops after Cleansing.
Our Awakening Serum was created to be my desert island, all-in-one product. Filled to the brim with nothing but skin superheroes (14 of them in fact). It delivers all of your hydration, antioxidants, omegas, essential fatty acids and nutrients in a powerful bottle.
Our Purity Polish (available with our Ritual Combo) exfoliates, but can also be customised as a face mask depending on the time you have available.
I always like to remind our dear customers that our skin is our largest organ. In our experience the skin is one of the most powerful messengers, indicating an imbalance in the body. If you are unhappy with your skin, try to see your skin's problems as a gift instead of a curse, and listen to what it has to say.
Remember, beautiful skin is the perfect partnership between what you put on it, and what you put on you. Having a healthy internal routine is just as important as the external. Tend lovingly to both and your skin will return to its natural state of radiance.
